Chromatic Progressions
22 May - 7 June 2002
My involvement in abstract painting emanated from an initial interest in the depiction of the human form. Despite the figurative element of this early work, my concentration centred on the use of planes, tone and colour.
It soon became apparent that the non-representational aspects of the placement of these planes of colour and tone, and their interplay and relative positions in space, were becoming the predominant focus of my work. Progressively I lost the requirement for representing a subject in my composition, instead gaining fulfillment from the harmonious combinations that I hope I have achieved in these works. With this transition to abstraction I found myself drawn towards geometric forms, and away from organic shapes.
By juxtaposing and interweaving flat areas of colour, I aim to create depth and harmony whilst attaining an ambiguity of position of these planes relative to one another and within the space of the painting. Additional parameters of tone and transparency further develop this ambiquity and balance.
'Chromatic Progressions' defines my palette, that is, the personal range of colour and tone that form the language of my work.
